Mobile diesel grater
Self-contained grating unit on a towable chassis, to process the harvest close to the field.
What this machine does
This grater uses the same working member as the fixed model — a rotor fitted with perforated plates turning at high peripheral speed — but mounts it on a road chassis with its own power source. The logic is that of a mobile process: since cassava root enters physiological deterioration within seventy-two hours of lifting, and two thirds of its mass is water, it is often more rational to move the machine to the field than to carry the harvest to the workshop.
Diesel drive frees operation from the electricity grid, absent or unstable across much of the growing areas. In exchange it imposes engine maintenance discipline and an operating cost per tonne above that of an electric drive. This machine is therefore justified by a contract-work business model or by distance from the grid, rarely by convenience alone.

The parts that do the work
Grating rotor
Balanced drum with interchangeable perforated plates, identical in principle to the fixed grater.
Diesel engine
Robust single-cylinder unit with manual or electric start, chosen for local parts availability.
Guarded transmission
V-belts in a closed guard, protecting the drive from dust and the operator from the danger zone.
Towable chassis
Drawbar, track tyres, parking stand and chocks.
Technical data and configurations
| Characteristic | Indicative value |
|---|---|
| Indicative throughput | 0.5 to 2 t/h of peeled roots |
| Drive | diesel, 10 to 24 hp depending on size |
| Rotor peripheral speed | 20 to 35 m/s |
| Particle size obtained | mostly below 2 mm |
| Mobility | two-wheel chassis, tractor or pick-up hitch |
| Wear parts | grating plates, belts, engine filters |
| Product contact materials | AISI 304 stainless steel |
| Safety | closed transmission guard, hopper cover |
These are usual design ranges for this type of machine, intended to guide early thinking. The contractual characteristics of the equipment actually manufactured — throughputs measured at acceptance, absorbed power, real footprint and weight — are established by the SOTIC design office and stated in the technical offer.
Available configurations
- Several engine ratings according to the throughput sought.
- Electric-start version with battery and alternator.
- Can be combined with a mobile centrifuge to form a complete contract-work set.
Installation requirements
- Park on flat, load-bearing ground, stand and chocks in place before starting.
- Area clear for carriers bringing roots and for pulp removal.
- Refuel with the engine stopped and cool, away from the working area.
- Provide basic rain shelter for extended campaigns.
Maintenance and safety at the workstation
A machine lasts as long as its maintenance does. The points below appear in the preventive maintenance plan handed over at acceptance and are covered during operator training.
Preventive maintenance
- Rigorous engine servicing: the air filter is the critical part in dusty conditions.
- Check grating plates and belt tension at every shift handover.
- Check tyre pressures and hitch condition before any move.
- Full cleaning of the grating chamber at the end of the day.
Safety
- The engine must be stopped before any action on the hopper or the guard.
- Never move the machine with the rotor turning.
- Hearing protection near the engine when running.
Before ordering this machine
They depend on engine rating, working speed and actual load. The useful figure is not hourly consumption but consumption per tonne of roots processed, since that is what enters the cost price. We record this value during acceptance tests, on the client's own material.
A PTO-driven version is technically possible and attractive where the farm already has a tractor available during the campaign. It removes the engine, its servicing and its cost, but ties up the tractor. This option is discussed at the sizing stage, in the light of the existing fleet.
